Revue: Sitting with Abba

I stood beside the car and grinned rather sheepishly.  “Jose”  he said his name was.

But for all I knew, he could have been my guardian angel disguised in an auto mechanic’s coveralls.

As a matter of fact, I thanked God again and again for my mom’s foresight.  She had first taken out the AAA policy years ago.

After she died, I adopted the policy although I had never used it.

That is, until now.

I had borrowed my son’s car since he had a full day of

university classes, and wouldn’t need the car during the day.Anticipating Happy Hour in Orvieto_Lynn Abbott_20x20 Oil with copyright mark

But unlike my usual vehicle, his car does not have an irritating ping to remind me to turn off the car’s lights before exiting the vehicle.

Yeah.  That’s right.  The battery had died…

Kaput.

Nothing.

The lights had fully drained the charge. And I was stuck.

I thanked God again and again for my mom’s foresight.

As is usually my good fortune, whenever something goes wrong, my husband is out-of-town.  This past week was no exception.

I imagined my son rolling his eyes.  He regularly reminds me that I should not attempt to multi-task.

“You just haven’t got the talent for it, Mom,” he gently chides.

And he’s right.  I just didn’t want to hear him say it.  So, I chose the lesser embarrassment.  I called AAA.Anticipating Happy Hour in Orvieto_Lynn Abbott_20x20 Oil with copyright mark

I breathed a sigh of relief and contrition as I heard the car turn over.  I thanked Jose profusely, and promised to drive the car for more than the minimum half hour.

And right then and there, I knew I would not make full confession to my son.  I decided that some things should remain on a “need-to-know-only” basis.

But the sun had not yet set on that day.  After picking up my son from class and dropping him home, I ran out to finish my final errands.

I knew I would not make full confession to my son.

With a carload of groceries, I later pulled into our garage which doubles as my husband’s DIY workshop.

Something went clunk.  And that never bodes well.

Even with the engine still running, I could hear a loud hissing.

I leaped out of the car just in time to discover one of my husband’s specialty drill bits lodged in my front tire.

Ugh.  Another call to AAA in my future?  Maybe, I’d just stay home for a while.

Anticipating Happy Hour in Orvieto_Lynn Abbott_20x20 Oil with copyright markObviously, my son is absolutely correct.  Multi-tasking never works out well for me.  For me, life in hyper-drive inevitably leads to a crash.

After all, batteries need recharging time.  Undoubtedly, I need time for regular maintenance; my life’s “garage” definitely needs clean-up on a regular basis to ensure that there is nothing encumbering me on my journey, (Hebrews 12:1).

That’s right. When I’m consumed with frantic activity and leave my light on continually, my life’s battery drains.

True, I spend daily time in prayer and I read God’s Word. Like clockwork.  Time with my Savior has long been a part of my routine.

Nevertheless, I’ll admit that, on occasion, I have been known  to  approach time with my Savior at a frenetic pace.

Bible reading? Check.

Prayer? Check.

Then, I kick into overdrive.

When such is the case, it isn’t uncommon for me to pick up “encumbrances” along the way.  And quite honestly, sometimes I’m so harried that I simply keep “rolling.”

For me, life in hyper-drive inevitably leads to a crash.

Ignore the issue and hope it goes away unfortunately becomes my modus operandi.

Anticipating Happy Hour in Orvieto_Lynn Abbott_20x20 Oil with copyright markYup, pretty much a bad idea.

The result? My tires go flat.   And any number of serious consequences overtake me.

Suffice to say, life on the autobahn takes its toll.

But our Savior teaches a better way…

If anyone ever had a massive ‘to-do’ list and limited time, it was Christ.

Enormous crowds demanded Christ’s time. With such an incredibly vast ministry to fit into three short years, Christ certainly could have justified working ’round the clock.

Yet, He took time away to “recharge,” to sit with His Father.  For example, after feeding the five thousand, Jesus sent his disciples to Bethsaida by boat (Mark 6:46) .

Our Savior teaches a better way…

Mark significantly writes, ‘After leaving them, He went up on a mountainside to pray.’

Even as the tasks increased, Christ did not neglect time with His Father.

It seems counter-intuitive, doesn’t it? To set aside quiet time during an extremely busy week runs contrary to human reason.

‘I don’t have time for that today,’ I frequently tell myself.Anticipating Happy Hour in Orvieto_Lynn Abbott_20x20 Oil with copyright mark

Yet, in the midst of unceasing activity, human need for God is all the greater.

Jesus, God incarnate, knew this to be true not only for himself but also for us.  Just prior to feeding the five thousand, He invited His disciples to ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest,’ (Mark 6:30).

Yes, Abba knows us.  He understands that we fray around the edges if we neglect our time with Him.

Perhaps, like me, you’ve been living life on the freeway. How ’bout it?

Let’s make a pact:  we’ll begin anew this week and put aside daily “down-time” to “recharge” with our Heavenly Father.

“And immediately He (Jesus) made the disciples get into the boat, and go ahead of Hi to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.  And after He had sent the multitudes away, He went up to the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening He was there alone, “~ Matthew 14:22-23

“Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need,” ~Hebrews 4:16

“Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, The God who is our salvation,” ~Psalm 68:19

  1. Response to facebook entry:

Bet you that 9 out of 10 human beings identify with your dilemma. Multi-tasking is difficult. First ¾ of my life I somehow functioned that way. Now is a totally different story. So I understand. Have to tell you though, I think you do a super method of operation. I give you a medal!! Keep on going, you are fine just like you are.

Remind me to tell you about multi-tasking and my kitchen fiasco! Ha! I’m better off to focus on just one thing at a time. 😀 Love you, dearest Bev!! ❤ ❤

    B. AAA is a life saver. I’ve only used it twice and it was a game changer and life saver.
    C. Abba, Lynn, is constantly by your side—this I know. You are about the most ardent follower I know…He is never a step away from you.
    D. You could have called me you know to come get you…it just would have taken me a couple of 6 or so hours 🙂

  3. Wonderful analogies. We certainly have reminders along the way to examine our lives throughout each day – whether we take time to fellowship with Christ – or even to pray. These should be priorities but I struggle each day – but my heart’s desire is there.

  4. Yes, we need to have our batteries charged every day. One of the ways mine gets charged, second to my times with my Lord, is via reading what God is teaching his other children, my brothers and sisters in Christ. It helps strengthen and encourage me to read what you are experiencing and learning in your times with God.

    1. No, I haven’t, dear Linda… I took the Taylor-Johnson test years ago, but not a ministry style survey. But I’ve always been a story-teller –through ink and image– 😉 since I was a young child. I’m so glad that God can now use that to encourage people. Thank you with all my heart for identifying and affirming that in me! I think you most certainly must be a “Barnabas.” You truly have the gift of encouragement! Love and huge hugs!! ❤ ❤

  6. I’m in on the pact! thanks, sometimes we just need a friend to encourage us to make the time. I finally got help on two things, that I put aside constantly which build up relentlessly. It feels amazing just to have a friend by your side in those out of control but pressing things. Prayer can be like that too because although God doesn’t spend eternity chasing us up with reminders, we know, in that little calendar in our brains, that he deserves more time, and we need more time with him. Sometimes we just need to send the multitudes away and turn the other way. Switch our posture from head down bum up to head up bum down.

    1. Thank you; thank you, dear Lauren!! I’m so thankful that you and I will be able to encourage one another! And I love the way you express our need for time with Abba…the necessity of sending “the multitudes away and turn the other way. Switch our posture from head down bum up to head up bum down.” What a memorable thought!! You’re awesome! God bless you greatly, my talented friend! ❤ ❤

      3. Hi Lynn, It’s been a week when I needed the encouragement of friends to pray so I am grateful. I have felt distant from almost everyone in my life this week. It’s a ‘just holding on’ week of extreme tiredness and no real end in sight. The end will come though, and I will look back glad of people like you for getting me through by reminding me to take the time, even when there was no time because that is the only way I am getting through. Thank you so much for your encouragement. Lots of love L

  7. Ello, it’s been a while Lynn – yours is the first I have read and commented on in a while. Great timing.

Some things that jumped out at me and that I like in your post

“When I’m consumed with frantic activity and leave my light on continually, my life’s battery drains.” – How true for all of us, but only some will admit that the battery drains, Thanks for your honesty.

Check, check , check – the old shopping list approach to walking with Jesus – I am guilty of this. Good reminder of what not to do

But our Savior teaches a better way… – What he says in Matthew about taking his yoke upon us comes to mind and is an awesome example of what it means to rest. We think we can get away with not resting lol., if Christ took the time it makes sense for us as well to take rest

Amen to your pact Lynn, I am with you!

Thanks heaps for sharing my friend, praying you will make better choices to rest for sure.

I LOVE your painting. I can actually see myself coming over the hill, stroking away the branch of leaves and staring in awe at the Mountain. I ‘feel’ the call of GOD and the convenient bench and my emotions go into overdrive as I recognise the invitation.

  9. Lynn, thank you for sharing your “need to know only” with us. How so like us all. But He knows how to stop us and brings us to Himself. I know when to set everything else aside, when I am exhausted, running on fumes. “Abba, Father” seems to be a cry we all need to make many times during the day. Much love and blessings for your week.

  10. I cannot agree more. I never regret taking time to pray or study. Somehow the time works out. I think sometimes we fail to trust that He will help us get “everything” done if we take time out. He can, and He will. 😊

  11. So many times in my life wonderful things big and small have happened because I spent time with Our Heavenly Father. Example from this morning as I was with him an idea for a powerpoint presentation for my class that starts tomorrow came to me. So why do I not spend time every morning? Think I would learn after all these years

As I grow older, I think back to days of raising a family and not seeming to have the quiet time you’re talking about. Wasn’t it Martin Luther who said the busier the day, the more time he needed to spend in prayer? I find that to be so true. If I pray, Abba helps everything to fall better into place. I’m so glad you love the song. It’s one of my favorites. Much, much love and huge hugs to you, dear Trudy!! ❤ ❤

I mostly find it in the a.m. and can sit for hours. But life always creeps in and errands and all of it and reluctantly I get up and move on. GOD continually draws me back and I GO when HE calls me…….it is a little bit of Heaven here. Just imagine the real thing!! May we all keep our priorities straight and put our LORD first. Give HIM the first fruits of our days. Blessings friend! Great POST!

  17. Lynn, the painting is absolutely beautiful, AND I so identify with the story of trusting your son to drive while you relinquished control. That is so like what our Father, Abba, asks us to do, and while we go through the traffic, we learn to trust Him with every curve, every narrow road, and every stop. Thank you for reminding us of His great Shepherding as He drives us through this earthly life. May He bless you with many more beautiful paintings and stories. Karen

I just started doing teaching seminars so I started the Trumpet Blast to go along with those. Thank you so much for following. You know I love your blog – it gives me encouragement every week!!!

Lynn as I type this comment to you please forgive me if it’s not flowing freely, the reason for this is because I have a pencil in my other hand as I write a note to remind myself to bring in the washing in the Morning so I can Iron it. I also stop every now and again to check if the Cake I’m baking is cooked and of course I play with Mo-Joe and Micky Moo, my M and M’s on the way back from the Kitchen while I quickly write a shopping list for Monday…. OK Lynn I’m back typing your Comment now.

But I was wondering dear Lynn, it you could explain what multi-tasking is as I’m not sure what you mean. Is it something we have to go to University to learn? or are we Born with it? and what does it look like if we have it?

But I am sorry Lynn to learn you don’t have it and it must be noticeable because your Son couldn’t see it on you but perhaps I haven’t got it either because nobody tells me I have but the funny thing is they often say to me; “Please sit still I’m trying to tell you something!!! Oh well we never stop learning!

Seriously, Thank you Lynn for your helpful Message, we do need to be reminded. I often talk to our Abba Father in the Closet of my Heart and I sing to Him too and I tell Him how much I Love Him and Thank Him for His never ending Love. I ask for His guidance in what I say and do and I also talk to Him about what is happening in my life, I do the same with Jesus our Spiritual Husband too.

But to be honest Lynn, lately my personal Bible Study has been rushed too. With studying Cults deception which means I’m checking the differences in their Translation to ours I find my time is limited. But I was just saying yesterday to our Abba Father that I would like to read the entire Bible again in sequence as I have done a few times before and yes as you also find in your quite times Lynn, I’m very Blessed when I do and of course when I read Christian Posts like yours with God’s Truth confirmed in Scripture. I very much enjoy graphics too and also your Beautiful Paintings Lynn, which are truly a Gift from God.

    1. Oh, yeah… I know I’ll be working on this the rest of my life. It’s so easy to get caught up in busy-ness. But you, dear TR, are such a wonderful example of someone who spends time listening to Abba! You encourage and inspire us all! ❤ ❤

      1. I definitely could do more, I fall short 🙂 and I’m so thankful He gives us reminders sometimes gently and sometimes with conviction. We all need it. He deserves His glory. ❤

    1. It’s no wonder you feel frayed… what an incredible number of hats you are currently wearing! Wow! Anyone would be tired. I am praying now for you… for God to strengthen you and for you to “mount up with wings like eagles…” Thank you for your extremely kind words here. I was simply preaching to myself again 😉 ❤ ❤

  22. I accept your challenge and will make a pact to spend daily time in prayer with my Lord Jesus! I haven’t been regularly in the word and I let life get in the way. I love your paintings!
